With much sadness that we inform you of the passing of Tommy Tassell.
Tommy moved to Mt Isa as a paid player in 1965 from Brisbane. He played for Blackstars and then transferred to Townies. He was a player, a coach, an administrator for the game for over 50 years and a friend to all who knew him.
In 1968 played for North West Queensland against Great Britain. In 1969 he scored the first try for Mt Isa in their 1969 Foley Shield victory – the first in Mt Isa’s history. Tommy also represented NQ in 1970 and 1971 and played against touring Great Britain in 1971.
In 2008 was named in Mt Isa’s Legends of League team. Tommy was announced as a Life Member of the QRL Northern Region at the Cairns Junior Grand Final Day 2018.
Many Mount Isa U14 teams have travelled over the years to cairns to participate in the Tommy Tassel Carnival named in his honor. Tommy would be there to personally greet the team when they arrived and made sure they had all they needed. Safe to say his heart still belonged in the Isa.
Tommy is survived by his wife Sandy and 3 boys who all were born in Mt Isa and played in the NRL – Brad, Kris and Jason Tassell.
Tommy was a true champion of rugby league and we thank him for his work towards Rugby league.
The Cutters and Blackhawks are having a minutes silence this week in the ISC and all teams are wearing a black arm band.
